I am using this Samsung DVD Writer for everything! It is great for copying CDs, DVDs, backup and burn DVDs and CDs. It is a nice improvement over its predecessor: Samsung USB 2.0 External Optical Drive Super-SE-S084D/TSBS Writemaster , Slim External DVD Writer (Gloss Black) . It’s main improvements are a sleeker design, is an enhanced disc velocity (how fast the drive detects a disc after it is inserted), and easier to open the disc tray and close. No special software is required to use it, it works as a plug-and-play device. It works on Apple computers and the Microsoft OS. The difference in read / write speed seems a little sloppy, but it costs about $ 10-15 less than the previous model. If I need another external DVD drive, I’ll more than likely buy a new one of these. Thank you for reading 9 March 2013 Edit: It is just over a year since I originally wrote a review on this product. I now recommend this drive instead: Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD 6X USB 2.0 External Slim Blu-ray Writer Drive (Black) . Samsung’s Blu-ray drive can be expensive, but it gives you the ability to play Blu-ray discs, as well as CDs and DVDs. It works similarly, without any special software plug-n-play.
I ordered the Samsung DVD drive at the same time as my Acer AspireRevo w / o optical drive, so I could download / install software so far it has. worked to perfection., the installation was Plug N Play with Windows 7, it will burn to a DVD-R with just the USB data cable, no need to use two USB ports. It plays DVD movies charge on a computer w / o an optical drive and burns CDs and DVDs.
First, the problem: My Mac Mini ’07 came with a crap internal DVD burner. It was loud, it was eating slices, it will scratch the discs do not eat it, and worst of all, it would pretend discs had properly if they had not burned! I experienced a success rate breakdown: 40% correct, skipped 25%, 10% to scratched to use, 24% useless for burning problems, 1% required forcible ejection (forceps and / or screwdriver), resulting in little bits of silver plastic instead of a DVD. I gave it, and decided against all logic to replace with another of Apple sells it. Do NOT try that! You do not need them no longer sell in the stores. Anyway, the instructions for the violation of a Mac Mini include a spatula (not a joke), and digital offerings. . After dressing my hand, returning my neighbor spatula, and a trip to the doctor for an anti-tetanus booster, I decided after a lateral solution Now, the solution: External! Oh Joy! O Rapture! More desk space wasted … oh, wait … it fits on top of my computer! Only one cable! Dongly two bits, though (move mouse). Ready! It works perfectly. ! No more noise, no more scratches, and no additional tools The Pros: barely larger than a CD case No power cord underrun protection (no more inexplicable Coaster) Multi-format compatibility (many formats … mom their own hard drives now can buy) Quiet (if a little buzzy) no setup required easy to update firmware, even on a Mac The cons: Two USB ports required Ridiculous Packaging (3 times the included software is only for Windows (Shame, Shame) more than necessary, it would be $ 10 cheaper if they reduced the packaging ) The verdict: This was not the first external DVD burner I’ve tried (do not get me started on LG), but is the best. It has burned more than 450 different types of hard drives with only 5-6 coasters in the crowd, and most of those were my fault. Flawless little performer. Cheap but not cheaply made. Firmware Updates (4 so far) are simple and show an unusual attention to the user. Definite Best Buy UPDATE 1 May 2012:. Well it had to happen sometime. After nearly 1000 of the little guy burns victim was a power failure during firing. It was not the same since. Since this is a known way to kill a DVD burner, it brings nothing of the debt. I was pressed for time and could not even wait for delivery the next day, so I went to my local computer store to buy a new one. They were sold out. Very confused, I had an I / O Magic DVD burner that cost buying more. Although my emergency purchase has worked out well, if and when it breaks, I’ll reset Samsung. Only 5-stars, still a best buy.
