A Mediocre Machine, but Gets the Job Done ~highlights~***** Un-secured vertical-loading DVD-RW drive (drops disks)***** No Bluetooth or Wifi***** “Forgets” added on peripherals***** No adjustment for Monitor aspect, only resolution***** Upgradable (minimally)***** Adequate for most purposes, but not for high-end processing or gaming***** Intuitive setup***** Lightweight and Small FootprintThe Acer Aspire is a decent computer for those who aren’t computer savvy and need something that is easy to set up and use for basic applications such as email and word processing. It does have the Windows 8 OS, an interface I absolutely loathe, but I’m not factoring that into this review, for Microsoft will be coming out with Windows 10 in August, and it will be made available to all Windows 7 and 8 users at no charge. The Acer literally “walks” you through the setup process, making it very simple to get up and running, and I had this system running in…

How to make this into an usable computer…sort of… My first draft of this review was titled, “An Abacus would be faster.” That’s basically true for the out-of-the-box system. It’s so slow that I came close to throwing the review system in the trash. Then I started playing to see why it was so slow and discovered that it could be turned into something usable.Basically, you need to strip off all the preinstalled junk software. If you’re only going to spend the time to do to remove one, McAfee is the worst offender. It added almost a minute to the start-up time and slowed everything operation down to an absolute crawl. The other programs installed by Acer aren’t nearly as bad, but they still waste memory space and eat into the computer’s performance. When you have a very low end computer, it needs all the help it can get…get rid of all the unnecessary junk. Microsoft makes a free anti-virus/firewall program called Windows Defender. It’s disabled if you have any third-party anti-virus software installed, but…

Compact design, easy installation, security & privacy issues out the gate, very weak internals The aspire axc-603-ub17 desktop is a teeny little box, approximately the size of my xbox one. The finish is excellent. Very attractive, sleek, and cool. The combo sits nicely on a desk.4 GB ram (enough for light computing), 500 GB standard drive that will be enough for most people who don’t game or edit videos/photos. The CPU is very underwhelming. The 2.40 has a little juice, but doesn’t have enough cache and threads to put a dent on editing, gaming, or blazing fast load times. This will drive people who are used to gaming machines/graphic beasts nuts.If this for a family member for watching movies, surfing the web, or possibly a station for college, this is right. At $300, you can build a much better computer that can do some light gaming. But, that’s not why you came here. Everything here is done, ready to go, and guides you through installation. Windows 8.1, the keyboard and mouse, software to get you running are all here. However, that’s not to say there…
